A Diplomatic Role Forged by Loyalty
Supporting peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
A Values-Driven Initiative
While not a professional diplomat, Dan Gertler's deep-seated loyalty to the Congolese people and his commitment to their community compelled him to seek every possible avenue to support their well-being. Recognizing that lasting peace was the essential foundation for social and economic progress, he was driven to contribute to stability. This values-driven initiative led to his appointment in 2002 as Special Emissary to the United States by President Joseph Kabila.
Special Emissary to the United States
In this role, he provided a vital channel of communication, ensuring Congo's priorities were heard directly in Washington and supporting broader efforts to end conflict. In this capacity, Gertler engaged with senior U.S. officials and regional leaders to help advance sensitive negotiations. His involvement contributed to key milestones that helped create conditions leading to the DRC's first democratic elections in more than four decades.
“It is not an exaggeration to say that Dan's actions, persistence and commitment to achieve the same peace and democracy goals in the DRC which the United States was pursuing, were important and instrumental in saving countless innocent lives in the DRC and the surrounding region.”
Lasting Impact
Gertler's diplomatic work was a direct reflection of his core belief: that his success carries a responsibility to help the communities to which he is connected. While part of a wider international process, his contributions demonstrated how private individuals with deep local relationships can support peace-building efforts when driven by genuine commitment to community welfare.
